Jazz Lyric Scramble: Communication through Jazz Songs, 10:00am

All ages

10am - 4:45pm
Jazz is bigger than the music that started a movement.  Artists and leaders in many areas shaped the path of jazz and the Harlem Renaissance.  Writers like Langston Hughes played with sound and rhythm in their stories and poetry, incorporating syncopation and repetitive phrases.  Discover the ways that writers integrated sound into their writing and create your own unique story using artist biographies and songs from jazz standards and modern hits.
This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.

Ella Fitzgerald: Learn to Improvise!, 10:00am

All ages

10am = 4:45pm
Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz vocalist, known during the Harlem Renaissance for her impressive vocal range and her unique style of sung improvisation known as ‘scat’. Learn how music is a form of self expression, from performance to post-production. Sing along with Lady Ella in your own style to experiment with improvisation. Record your unique rendition on an iPad, and use technology to alter the way your voice sounds. Save your finished product to our sound cloud and download it at home!
This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.

Swept Away: When Water Meets Sand, 10:30am

All ages

10:30am - 4pm
Explore how water changes ecosystems with our new Erosion Table! Discover water’s power on Earth’s surface by creating rivers and lakes through sand.

Thinking Like a Composer (Demo), 11:00am

All ages

Music is made up of notes of different pitches, from low to high. An important characteristic of jazz music is that these notes are arranged in unusual rhythms. Examine a historic score sheet by composers such as Duke Ellington and Mary Lou Williams. Then match the sounds that you hear with notes on the paper and create your own score.
This program is part of our "Jazzed!: The Changing Beat of 125th Street" exhibit and takes place on the lower level.
