Author Studies

CMOM’s English language arts programs build language skills through movement, art and storytelling. Students explore the process of authorship and illustration to develop critical thinking skills and foster a lifetime love of books and reading.

These programs meet performance standards for New York State and New York City Department of Education in English language arts including for speaking, listening, viewing and literature and applied learning including communication tools and techniques.

Budding Bookmakers

Recommended for Grades K – 3rd
Designed to introduce a wide variety of books and excite students about reading, this program explores the illustrations and writing of Caldicott award winning authors and illustrators.

Beatrix Potter

Recommended for Grades K – 3rd
As a scientist Beatrix Potter published essays on a variety of subjects including her most famous on Mushrooms. Learn how she transformed her careful observation of nature into beautiful illustrations and colorful characters such as Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and Squirrel Nutkin.

Dr. Seuss

Recommended for Grades 1 – 4th
Theodore Geisel began as a political cartoonist before he transformed how children learn to read by writing The Cat in the Hat. Explore the creative process behind the whimsical connections Dr. Seuss made between reading skills, visual literacy and moral messages in this interdisciplinary program.

Lewis Carroll

Recommended for Grades 3 – 5th
As a Professor of Mathematics Lewis Carroll enjoyed logic games, geometry and optical illusions. Explore how he wove these ideas into the literary classic Alice in Wonderland by exploring the math, geometry and science referenced in the book.

Ancient Greek Myths

Recommended for Grades K – 6th
Prepare your students for a visit to CMOM’s Gods, Myths and Mortals exhibition or use this program to explore the myths and history of ancient Greece. Build a Trojan Horse or design a temple frieze, make mythical monsters and learn about the gods of Olympus and heroes of these ancient tales.

China Through the Eyes of Monkey King

Recommended for Grades K – 6th
Students learn about modern and ancient Chinese culture through an in-depth exploration of the epic tale Journey to the West. Create an animated drawing, paint a traditional landscape, make a Chinese Opera mask and more.

The program will include an awe-inspiring, up-close encounter with this important but misunderstood predator. Families will learn about the history of wolves in the United States, the importance of wolves in a healthy ecosystem, and the efforts to save these magnificent creatures for future generations.  Presented by the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) in South Salem, NY
