Community Outreach

CMOM takes its expertise in working with children and families out of the museum and into the community.

New York City
Family Health Pilot Program in South Bronx: East Side House Settlement
Building on five years of family-based arts and literacy programs at East Side House Settlement (ESHS) in the South Bronx that helped prepare young children for success in school, CMOM is in the second year of a three-year national pilot program to test its Eat Sleep Play arts-based health curriculum. CMOM health educators use the curriculum to teach children, parents and caregivers in this 8,000 resident low-income community how to eat healthy, get the right amount of sleep and lead an active lifestyle.

New Orleans
In spring of 2011, CMOM began testing the Eat Sleep Play curriculum with families in New Orleans through a partnership with the Louisiana Children’s Museum. CMOM health educators train staff from Louisiana Children’s Museum to use the Eat Sleep Play curriculum to teach children, parents and care givers at the Royal Castle Child Development Center in New Orleans about making healthy choices.

Research and Evaluation
CMOM is working with external evaluators The Michael Cohen Research Group to conduct a three year evaluation of the curriculum pilots in the Bronx and Louisiana. CMOM has already seen very encouraging results from the first 11-week pilot program in the Bronx last spring, with a noted change in food habits, portion control and attitudes in a relatively short period of time. Caregivers switched from whole milk to skim milk, reduced portion sizes, used fruits as snacks and learned new ways to introduce more vegetables into their family’s diet. The research highlighted small but important changes in opportunities to adjust the Eat Sleep Play curriculum and identify key obstacles to healthy behavior.

CMOM’s Spring 2012 Benefit was a resounding success.

With 350 friends and supporters gathered together—and over $800,000 raised to support CMOM’s vital community outreach program—we could not have imagined a more inspired and heartfelt celebration of our commitment to families, the arts, health and education.. This outpouring of generosity and excitement also resulted in $66,000 raised that evening to provide FREE access to the Museum's educational exhibits for 6,500 Head Start families. This was a great start towards our goal of raising funds to serve 20,000 Head Start families in 2012.
